Don't Be Afraid...

to be brutally honest...

Having dipped a tentative toe into the water by contacting our district rep, who wants to talk me out of applying for seminary?

By all means, bring up the time and the expense (so not cheap), and anything else you can
think of on the negative side.

Just the application process can take up to a year, before you even get to think about
an actual class... and then it's a five year process after that, and then a three year probationary period after that, so almost a ten year process before you actually get to do anything with it.
Plus working full-time...

  1. And then what do you do with it? We heathens are pretty ignorant about this stuff, so fill me in.

  2. As near as I can figure, after your five years of classes, you are ordained as a probationer/student pastor, so you are actually assigned by the bishop to a church - Eric is of the opinion that if I start this, we have to at least have on the radar the idea that we need to be prepared to go where we're sent, so we need to have our financial act together in the next 5-7 years! If you get past the probationary period you get a church of your own.
But I would not quote me on any of this because there is just as great a chance that I am completely wrong about how all of it works.
Right now it would seem that I need to complete the candidacy studies (whatever that is!) and I'm supposed to read the Christian as Minister, which I see I can pick up on Amazon for .09 used.

Seriously, absolutely at step less than one at this point!

  3. So you go where you're sent and you rotate every few years right? Kind of like our overseas assignments. Anyway, I'm a great fan of shaking up your life now and then. The important thing is whether or not Eric is on board. What would he do wherever you went? You can only factor in the kids so much. Let's face it. They will be striking out on their own soon and could decide to go anywhere, so you can't decide where you want to be based on where you think they'll be. The first step is to plan, but once you have a plan, you've got to start!

  4. I think it's wonderful idea - the years will pass whether you do this or not. Congrats to you for taking the first step!
